St. Charles Residence By Kelly Ellis, landscape Designer
The concept of this project came from a picture the homeowner had clipped from a magazine. It showed a back living space with natural stone, a pergola, fireplace and cozy furniture. After the initial discussion with my client, I designed a plan with their vision in mind. The same theme was carried throughout the entire project.
After the first inspection of property it was very clear that the design could not compromise the drainage of rain/water runoff. Swales and drain tile were installed throughout to maintain water runoff properly. This needed to be done with high respect to the neighbors. Also the project needed to be implemented in phases. The front and back needed to be completed before the pool broke construction. This was to maintain access for equipment. After completion of the pool, the final finishes such as grading, plants in pool area, and sod were completed.
The front was my biggest challenge design wise. The front property had a strong grade change for the size of the lot. This required a taller retaining wall in front. However, the homeowner did not want a commercial look. I proposed a blend of natural flagstone wall material to match the house and outcropping stone to break it up and keep that natural feel. Natural flagstone cut steps were used and blended nicely with the pavers. The front yard, being a small area required smaller plants. The homeowner did not want the house hidden in any way. Boxwoods were planted along the walk adding some formality to the natural look. A blend of evergreens, hydrangeas, and various flowering plants soften the look and invite people in the home.
The backyard was a construction challenge. It was very important to manage this in proper phases. Being careful to disturb as few tree roots as possible, first the earth needed to be cut away and the fireplace installed. Once this was complete, the outcropping stone wall was installed. We really wanted to keep this natural and have areas for annuals. Upon completion of wall, the pergola, patio and built-in grill area were completed. Using proper products, natural stone, and keeping with the design concept, the living space really blends in well with pool area. The natural back drop really ads to the overall feel of the project. This is truly a beautiful backyard living room, and the homeowners can enjoy many seasons with their family and friends.
