For a young couple with a growing family who loved to entertain, the old patio felt exposed and lacked adequate space for both gathering and circulation to the back yard, while large seat walls felt confining and bulky pillar lights were obtrusive; the outdated style and subpar installation (causing it to fail) clashed with their contemporary tastes. Our clients were ready to take the plunge with an in-ground pool and replace their failing patio with a more usable, family-friendly space.

We designed for maximum function and sophisticated visual interest – horizontally with subtle changes in paver patterns and vertically with a pergola and stone walls. Attaching the pergola to the house frees up patio space while incorporating one of the pergola’s columns in the buffet/grill gives an opportunity for additional lighting and conversation for the cook. Wrapping the remaining column in stone balanced the visual weight and subtly emphasized the overall design elements.

Partially sinking the hot tub prevented blocking the rest of the yard while creating vertical interest, allowed us to echo the wall design of the grill and pergola column, and create a waterfall into the pool – an excellent element to mask the sound of busy road traffic nearby.

All the elements of the design are echoed in the fire pit – the stone wall with the band of colored brick, the wide pavers on a 45-degree angle set off by a double soldier course, and the ledgestone coping give this fire pit a distinction the old one never achieved.
