Style Meets Function for Wheaton Homeowners
Project Type: Landscape & Patio Design with Pergola and Fire Pit
Services: Hardscape Construction, Landscape Design
The original builder-grade patio was quickly becoming inadequate for this growing family. They envisioned an outdoor living space with a sleek, modern design but knew the sloping grade of their backyard posed several challenges both in budget and execution.
Expanding the patio footprint not only accommodates more people but allows for the creation of specific outdoor living spaces. Using a darker brick border and alternating the stone patterns help define those areas and prevent a large expanse of stonework from feeling visually flat and oppressive.
A contemporary-style, steel and wood pergola built over a gas fire pit provides a cozy family gathering place while echoing the modern design of the home’s interior.
Rather than keeping the original footprint of the patio all the way to the house, we gave some breathing room for plantings between the house and patio and on the sides of the patio. A gentle sense of enclosure using greenery gives the backyard the feel of a suburban oasis.
The now-gentle slope of the lawn into the rest of the yard is easy for both kids and adults. Using a rock border for the perimeter landscape bed – like a miniature dry creek bed – provides an exaggerated clean line into the softer, greener part of the yard and repeats the clean, modern feel of the hardscape elements of the patio.
Day or night, this family now has the space they need to relax, come together for quality time, and fully enjoy their home.
