How to Protect your Pavers in the Winter

The winter months in Chicagoland can be brutal not only on us but our landscapes, too.

Our hardscapes have to endure the cold and other elements that come with Chicago’s long winter season. Just as we take measures to protect ourselves from the elements, it’s also essential to protect your hardscapes now so they will be ready for spring and summer.

One very critical way to protect your hardscapes this winter is by your choice of tools for snow removal. We recommend using snowblowers for snow removal in the Chicagoland area. Snowblowers maintain a constant level and many come with rubber blades that reduce the chance of ruining pavers. If shovels are your only option, however, plastic shovels are much better to use on pavers than metal shovels. When using metal shovels, you risk damaging the surface of your pavers which can cause them to deteriorate over time.

Another way to protect both your hardscapes (and yourself) from the elements of winter is to remove ice from your pavers. Many people prefer using salt or sand to melt ice in the walkways around your home. Salt is the most effective way to melt ice and protect your pavers from freezing and cracking. However, if you have plant life nearby or pets that frequently walk over your pavers during winter, using sand as an ice-melting alternative may be a better fit. Whatever strategy you choose, your pavers will be protected from the chilling ice and you will also reduce your risk of slipping.

Protect your hardscapes from the brutal Chicago winters and enjoy their lasting beauty for summers to come by taking advantage of these two protective measures.
