Insect Control

It can be hard to determine which method is right for you when it comes to Insect Control. As a local landscaping company that understands local insect and pest problems, we are here to help you make the best decision for your home and your plants. We prefer to avoid liquid spray applications in the residential setting whenever possible; rather we encourage the use of granular systemic insecticides applied annually to the soil. Bruss Landscaping only recommends liquid chemical applications when damage from a pest infestation may cause the loss of a plant.

What are Systemic Insecticides?

Systemic insecticides are chemicals that do not harm plants when used for insect control. Plants absorb the insecticides similarly to how they absorb plant food, and transport the active ingredients throughout the plant tissue. The insecticide lives in the root system, stems and, leaves, flowers and fruit which makes it poisonous to insects and other pests – although extra care and caution need to be taken if applying to vegetables and fruits and may need to choose another pest control strategy.

The Benefits of Systemic Insecticides

  • Systemic insecticides are less likely to come in contact with birds, pets or humans than other insecticides. These products have little impact on the environment with virtually no chance of migration to another site, pet area, etc.
  • Application is less frequent than other insecticides. Although this is an effective method of insect control, it does filter through the plant and dilutes over time, but since it directly targets the pest, the solution does not need to be applied as often, nor will rain immediately wash the solution away.
  • Treating your plants and trees with a systemic insecticide promotes the longevity of your landscaping and prevents insects from causing significant damage.

Application of Systemic Insecticides for Insect Control

Spring application of granular systemic insecticides should be completed before plant materials reach full leaf. The existing mulch (if not being mulched after application) is pulled away from the root zone and the product is broadcast around the base of the tree or shrub. The mulch is then reapplied to cover the granular product and keep it in place. Moisture will slowly breakdown the product and it will be absorbed into the plant’s vascular system. When insect pests feed, they are controlled and/or move on to an untreated plant.

This is a service we recommend by professional application only. Contact Bruss Landscaping today if you think using a Systemic Insecticide is best for your home’s landscaping to prevent infestations of pests and insects.
